Which Social Media Platform Should My Business Use?

There is a large assortment of social media platforms out there. Social media networks range from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest, Flickr, MySpace and many more. Having a profile page on each of the major social platforms can be daunting as well as overwhelming. Rather than spread yourself thin among the top 5, 10 or 15+ social platforms it is often best to choose a number you can maintain and be active on. This may well be one social site and the site may not be the most popular social media network.

Target Market

What you need to do is be on the right one(s) rather than all. One of the best ways to find the best platforms is to contact your current customers and see which, if any, they are on. Also, which platforms are your competitors on?

Objectives

When it comes to promoting your business you need to decide what your overall objectives are you want to achieve. Is it more fans, more recognition of your brands, services you offer, customer service, promoting a contest, special offers or coupons, event notification and signup, etc.?

Relevancy

Don't post on your page items that don't pertain to your core business just so that you can show a "post". This will make your fans wonder if your business is truly what you say it is if you do not promote items directly related to your business. Be an expert and leader in your field. This is what your customers want. They do not want to know about your latest dinner, unless you are a restaurant or a baker. If your business is spread across many different areas you will find most social sites allow you to endorse and link between sites. Use this to cross promote your businesses so they can stay focused on their core businesses.

Frequency

The frequency of updates and interaction is determined not only on your schedule as you may have to make additional time for a successful social media plan. How often does news and information that can be beneficial to your site fans benefit from receiving information from you? Is it daily, weekly or monthly? You should strive to post at least weekly but only if you have meaningful information to present.
